Ulster Aviation Society Opens Its Doors for European Heritage Open Day 2026

Aviation enthusiasts, families, and history buffs are being invited to explore one of Ireland’s most impressive collections of historic aircraft when the Ulster Aviation Society (UAS) participates in the European Heritage Open Day (EHOD) weekend on 12-13 September 2026. The popular annual event will see the Society once again offer free public access to its remarkable heritage collection at Maze Long Kesh, Lisburn.

Building on the success of EHOD 2025, which attracted a record-breaking attendance of more than 7,200 visitors, the Ulster Aviation Society hopes to welcome even more guests to its unique aviation heritage centre. The event has grown significantly in recent years and is widely regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s largest European Heritage Open Day attractions.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Society’s two authentic Second World War aircraft hangars, which house an impressive collection of more than 55 aircraft and military vehicles. Many exhibits will be displayed outdoors throughout the weekend, with some aircraft making their EHOD debut. Volunteer guides will be available across the site to provide insights into the history, restoration, and significance of the exhibits.

One of the highlights for younger visitors and aspiring pilots will be the Society’s expanded flight simulation facilities. Guests can experience the UAS’s state-of-the-art simulator suites, now featuring seven flight simulators and six virtual reality headsets, offering a hands-on aviation experience alongside the historical displays.

The weekend will also showcase the behind-the-scenes work carried out by the Society’s volunteers. Restoration projects may be underway in Hangar 2, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see aviation preservation in action and learn how historic aircraft are maintained for future generations.

Adding to the festival atmosphere, the Wartime Living History Association will be present with World War II re-enactors, while members of the 501st Legion Northern Ireland will provide popular Star Wars-themed photo opportunities. Live entertainment will also be provided by Rock Choir NI. Food and refreshments will be available on site throughout the weekend.

The event will run from 10:00am to 5:30pm on both Saturday and Sunday, with entry and parking completely free of charge. Extensive parking facilities, wheelchair access, disabled amenities, baby-changing facilities, and guest Wi-Fi will be available to ensure a welcoming experience for all visitors. No pre-booking is required.

Located at Gate 3, Maze Long Kesh, 94 Halftown Road, Lisburn, BT27 5RF, the Ulster Aviation Society continues to play a vital role in preserving Northern Ireland’s aviation heritage. The EHOD weekend offers a rare opportunity to get up close to historic aircraft, meet the volunteers who care for them, and discover the stories behind one of the most significant aviation collections on the island of Ireland.

For anyone with an interest in aviation, military history, engineering, or simply looking for a fascinating family day out, the Ulster Aviation Society’s European Heritage Open Day weekend promises to be an event not to miss.
