Jet2 Places Order with Airbus
The UK low-cost leisure airline Jet2 has announced an order with Airbus for 36 Airbus A321neo’s with options for a further 24 aircraft. This is the first new aircraft order by the airline who currently operates a fleet of ageing Boeing 737-300 and -800’s. The order reflects the airline ambitious expansion plans over the coming years with deliveries to take place until 2028. At current list prices, the value of the deal is worth US$4.9 billion for the firm orders extending to US$8.1 billion should the full 60 aircraft be ordered. A press release by the company confirming that significant discounts were secured on the purchase.
The aircraft will be configured for 232 seats with an Airspace cabin featuring innovative lighting, new seating products and 60% larger overhead baggage bins for added personal storage. The A320neo Family incorporates the latest technologies, including new generation engines and Sharklets, delivering a 20 per cent reduction in fuel consumption per seat. With an additional range of up to 500 nautical miles/900 km. or two tonnes of extra payload, the A321neo will deliver Jet2 additional revenue potential.
Commenting on the deal, Chief Executive of Jet2, Philip Meeson said, “Jet2 will be proud to operate the Airbus A321neo in the years ahead. This aircraft is, in our opinion, the most efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft in its class today – it will give our holiday customers a wonderfully comfortable and enjoyable experience as they travel with us for their well deserved Jet2holiday.”
Also commenting was the Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, Christian Scherer who added, “We very much welcome Jet2’s decision. Traditionally having been operating non fly-by-wire aircraft, we note with great satisfaction that after having tested a couple of leased A321s and run a comprehensive evaluation, Jet2 is forward-looking and investing in modern and future proof Airbus fly-by-wire technology. This is a testimony to Jet2’s vision of efficiency, quality, performance and environmentally friendly flying.”
Jet2 currently have 14 destinations in their schedule from Belfast International with these new aircraft likely to be seen in the skies over Northern Ireland in the years ahead. Jet2 is just the latest customer to join the Airbus family who already has sold over 7,400 Airbus Neo family aircraft to over 120 customers worldwide.
