Recover Irish Aviation – The Urgent Steps Which Must Now be Taken

Next week the Cabinet meets to finalise a restart plan for Irish aviation. Recover Irish Aviation has set out the key areas and dates that need to be included in this plan. Our aviation sector has suffered severe damage due to government inaction and many of our colleagues in Shannon and Cork have this week lost their jobs. These urgent steps must be taken to avoid many others suffering the same fate:

  1. Immediate harmonisation with Common Travel Area with Britain- inbound restrictions to Ireland from Britain make no sense (open border with NI, high level of vaccination in UK)
  2. Urgent discussions with US to allow fully vaccinated US passengers visit Ireland by 4th July 2021 (Phase 1)
  3. Allow US passengers enter Ireland with a Covid Digital Certificate similar to that within in the EU (Phase 2)
  4. EU Digital Covid Certificate must be fully adopted by Ireland on 1st July 2021 – a 6 week delay will cause a loss of significant peak summer revenue and associated consequences
  5. Rapid antigen testing – as used extensively US, UK and many other European countries picking up infectious cases at point of departure. Professor Michael Mina (Harvard) said recently: better to test 20 mins prior to an activity with RAT than 72 hours before with PCR
