IAA Ban Boeing 737 MAX in Irish Airspace

Following on from the announcement this morning that the UK CAA were stopping all 737 MAX operations, the IAA has also issued a similar direction. In a statement released this afternoon, the IAA said they had decided to temporarily suspend the operation of all variants of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft into and out of Irish airspace, in the light of the two fatal accidents involving the aircraft type in recent months.

The temporary suspension took place with effect from 15.00hrs this afternoon.

The statement went on to say “This decision has been taken based on ensuring the continued safety of passengers and flight crew, which is the IAA’s number one priority.  The IAA has been closely monitoring the situation, however, as we do not currently have sufficient information from the flight data recorder we have, as a precautionary measure, issued instructions to stop any flights on Boeing 737 MAX from any operator arriving, departing or overflying Irish airspace. During the temporary suspension, the IAA will continue to work closely with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) and the manufacturer Boeing.”

Interestingly, the IAA have not deemed the threat as significant as the UK CAA as this suspension only applies to Irish airspace. The UK suspension applies to aircraft registered in the United Kingdom and aircraft registered in a third country flying in UK airspace. The significance of this means that there are still many Irish registered 737 MAX’s permitted to fly in other areas of Europe. Currently, Irish registered 737 MAX’s are operated by Air Italy, Mongolian Airlines and Norwegian.
