GECAS Sponsors the Future GEneration of Aviators

Eleanor O’Connell presents Certificates to TY Aviation Academy students at GECAS HQ Shannon.

GECAS TY Aviation Academy ‘took off’ last November with 20 TY students from across 8 Clare and Limerick secondary schools attending a week of aviation discovery.  Spring 2017 programme is now open for applications and will run from Monday 13th  – Friday 17th February. The programme is sponsored by GE Capital Aviation Services Shannon, the global leader in aircraft financing and is designed to attract teenagers who have a keen interest in an aviation career.

Eleanor O’Connell SVP Process Management & Controls, describes why the company is taking this important step in reaching out to the TY student population, “GECAS are very serious about attracting and retaining the best and brightest in the aviation sector. We want to attract the millennials to this sector and foster those who are serious about a career in Aviation”.

John Ludden GECAS GC said, ‘’The schedule for the week long academy exposes the TY students to core aspects of the Aviation sector through a series of talks and workshops. Students will have the opportunity to interact with pilots, engineers and air traffic controllers, and learn about the business and finance aspects of the industry. The week also includes a trip to a live aircraft maintenance facility and a chance to fly the B737 NG Simulator with an airline pilot.’’

Jane Magill MD at Atlantic AirVenture Aviation Centre said, “Atlantic AirVenture has a huge interest in assisting young people to explore aviation careers.  We are very pleased to work with GECAS to put in place this important programme. It’s a great opportunity for interested TY students to get a fully funded placement on the programme. We hope it will help them to see a clearer pathway to their future aviation career.”

GECAS TY Aviation Academy Application Details

Spring GECAS TY Aviation Academy programme is now open for applications. The programme will run from Monday 13th – Friday 17th February 2017. Application forms are available by emailing here. Students must be attending Transition Year to apply for this programme.

About the Author

Mark is an airline pilot flying the Boeing 737 for a major European airline. In addition he is also a Type Rating Instructor, Type Rating Examiner and Base Training Captain on the B737. Outside of commercial flying Mark enjoys flying light aircraft from the smallest 3 Axis microlights up to heavier singles. He is also an instructor and EASA Examiner on single engines and a UK CAA Examiner. He flies the Chipmunk for the Irish Historic Flight Foundation (IHFF). Mark became the Chairman of the National Microlight Association of Ireland (NMAI) in 2013 and has overseen a massive growth in the organisation. In this role he has worked at local and national levels. In 2015, Mark won ‘Upcoming Aviation Professional Award’ at the Aviation Industry Awards sponsored by the IAA. Mark launched this website back in 2002 while always managing the website, he has also been Editor and Deputy Editor of FlyingInIreland Magazine from 2005 to 2015.
