Temporary Restricted Area Established Over Druids Glen, Co Wicklow

Pilots operating in the east of Ireland are being advised of a Temporary Restricted Area (TRA) that has been established in the vicinity of Druids Glen Hotel and Golf Resort, Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, from 29th August to 2nd September 2026. The restriction has been introduced by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) at the request of the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration for security reasons.

The TRA covers an area surrounding Druids Glen and extends from the surface to 5,000 feet AMSL. The restriction is active daily between 0700 UTC and 2000 UTC from Saturday 29th August through Wednesday 2nd September 2026. During the active periods, the airspace will be classified as ICAO Class C and all aircraft operations within the restricted area are prohibited unless specifically exempted.

Exemptions apply to:

  • State aircraft operating on official duties.
  • Irish Coast Guard aircraft.
  • Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) operators on operational missions.
  • Aircraft specifically authorised by the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration.
  • Scheduled commercial arrivals and departures at Dublin Airport, including missed approach procedures.

The IAA states that all other aircraft are prohibited from entering the TRA while it is active and that any general exemptions normally granted to civil aviation will not apply within the restricted area.

A NOTAM will be issued by the Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) to formally promulgate activation of the airspace restriction. Pilots requiring further information or seeking authorisation to enter the area should contact the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration via coflight@justice.ie.

The restricted area lies within the Dublin CTA and encompasses airspace east of the Wicklow Mountains in the vicinity of Newtownmountkennedy and Druids Glen. All operations at Newcastle Airfield are suspended for the duration of the TRA. Pilots planning VFR or IFR operations in the region during the affected dates are advised to review the published NOTAMs and plan routing accordingly. The full TRA Notice is available to read here.

He is also an instructor and EASA Examiner on single engines and a UK CAA Examiner. He flies the Chipmunk for the Irish Historic Flight Foundation (IHFF). Mark became the Chairman of the National Microlight Association of Ireland (NMAI) in 2013 and has overseen a massive growth in the organisation.
