Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum Commences Roof Replacement Project

The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum has taken a significant step forward by appointing Healy Partners Architects and LyMar Contracts Ltd. to oversee a major overhaul of the main hall’s roof covering.

Under the tender, the project will dismantle and remove the existing failed fabric roof structure. It will be replaced with a new system comprising structural steel trusses, upgraded external windows, and a warm roof build-up designed to improve thermal performance and structural integrity, along with associated mechanical and electrical works.

Healy Partners Architects, based in Limerick and known for their culturally significant and award-winning designs across Ireland, will lead the architectural design, project oversight, and specification of heritage-sensitive materials and conservation methods. LyMar Contracts Ltd., a local construction firm experienced in civil engineering and tendered works, will be responsible for executing the installation and structural modifications required for the new roof building.

This contract marks a pivotal moment in the museum’s ongoing infrastructure improvements. The modern warm roof system not only enhances energy efficiency but also safeguards one of Ireland’s most iconic aviation heritage structures. The new roof promises to secure the museum’s central hall for years to come, protecting its unique collections while aligning with sustainable and conservation best practices.
