Nav Warning – Irish Hot Air Balloon Championships

The Irish Hot Air Balloon Championships will take place from Saturday 20th to Saturday 27th September at Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. In anticipation of this, the IAA has released a Navigational Warning to inform other pilots about the possibility of large numbers of balloons operating in that area during the event. The details are as follows:

LOCATION:Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, Co. Roscommon
DATE:Saturday 20th to Saturday 27th September 2025.
DURATION:0600 UTC to 0900 UTC and 1530 UTC to 1830 UTC daily

The purpose of the Navigational Warning is to request pilots during the normal course of navigation to avoid overflying Lough Key Forest Park, Boyle, Co. Roscommon, during the time period as specified above. The area to avoid overflying is contained within both Class C and Class G airspace. On the chart below, a circle has been drawn to aid pilots and controllers of the area to avoid overflying, described as follows:

LATERAL LIMITS:Circle with a radius of 13.5NM, centred on 53° 59’ 04” N, 008° 14’ 04” W
VERTICAL LIMITS:SFC to 2500ft AMSL EIKN Eastern Stub SFC to 4500ft AMSL EIKN Southern Stub SFC to 2500ft AMSL EISG Eastern Stub

Mark is an airline pilot flying the Boeing 737 for a major European airline. In addition he is also a Type Rating Instructor, Type Rating Examiner and Base Training Captain on the B737. Outside of commercial flying Mark enjoys flying light aircraft from the smallest 3 Axis microlights up to heavier singles. He is also an instructor and EASA Examiner on single engines and a UK CAA Examiner. He flies the Chipmunk for the Irish Historic Flight Foundation (IHFF). Mark became the Chairman of the National Microlight Association of Ireland (NMAI) in 2013 and has overseen a massive growth in the organisation. In this role he has worked at local and national levels. In 2015, Mark won ‘Upcoming Aviation Professional Award’ at the Aviation Industry Awards sponsored by the IAA. Mark launched this website back in 2002 while always managing the website, he has also been Editor and Deputy Editor of FlyingInIreland Magazine from 2005 to 2015.
