Galway Races Airspace Restrictions

The IAA has published details of airspace restrictions that will be in place this week for the duration of the Galway Races. The restrictions are as follows:

Lateral limits:Circle radius of 0.75NM centred on 53º 17’ 41” N, 008º 59’ 41” W.
Vertical limits:SFC to 1500 feet AMSL
Duration:The period of the restriction shall be from 0900hrs UTC to 1900hrs UTC daily from Monday 28th July to Sunday 03rd August, 2025 inclusive.

The Purpose of the TRA:

The purpose of the TRA is to ensure the safety of aircraft operating to and from the Galway Racecourse and of other air traffic operating in the vicinity at Ballybrit, County Galway in the period cited.

Airspace Classification & Communication Service:

The airspace contained within the TRA is classified as ICAO Class G. The TRA is located within the Shannon Flight Information Region (FIR). There is no dedicated communications service within the TRA or HAMMS. For flights operating to and from the TRA, Air Traffic Services, as appropriate, are provided by AirNav Ireland at Shannon ACC (AIP refers).

Flight Restrictions & Exemptions:

a. Flights Permitted in the TRA.

  1. State aircraft (including State Unmanned Aircraft Systems), aircraft of the Irish Coastguard Service, Aircraft Operators employed on an operational HEMS mission, shall be exempt from the restriction.
  2. Flights by aircraft, including Unmanned Aircraft Systems, authorised by the controlling authority.
  3. Rockets, with specific written permission from the Authority and the controlling authority.

b. Flights not permitted in the TRA.

  1. Flights by all other aircraft, including Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and rockets, are not permitted.
  2. Any exemptions, alleviations or permissions, other than those listed at ‘a. Flights Permitted in the TRA’ granted to aircraft, including Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and rockets, by the Authority, are not valid within the TRA during the periods cited.
  3. Any aircraft, including Unmanned Aircraft Systems, directed by the Authority not to enter the TRA, including aircraft already authorised as a permitted flight by the Flying Display Director as per a.ii.
