Book Review – Bronze & Beyond
This book is written for Glider pilots sitting the EASA Theoretical Knowledge Examination. This is in order to gain a Bronze Certificate in gliding. This is similar to gaining a PPL for powered pilots. The author, John McCullagh was a gliding instructor in Lasham in England. This is the 25th edition of the book, it covers essential information on a very wide range of aviation topics. While there would be a very limited number of Irish Glider pilots who could benefit from it, I think it would be extremely useful to power pilots, as most of the topics would also be applicable to them. It is written in an easy to read manner. There are questions and answers on each section.
I think it would be very useful to pilots who completed their ground school exams decades ago, who now feel the need to refresh their knowledge. It covers basic RT, transponders, GPS, flying into controlled airspace and many other topics that have changed greatly over the years. It would also be ideal for newer pilots, who have done little or no flying over the past year and are now looking forward to more months of lockdown.
This book does not go as deep into the subjects as a modern day PPL course. It really focuses on what one ground school instructor I knew would describe as ‘need to know, not nice to know’.
