ASL Airlines to Take Delivery of the First ATR-72-600F
Irish based ASL Airlines are due to take delivery of five brand new ATR-72-600F’s in the coming months to operate on behalf of Fed Ex. The first aircraft is due to be delivered in early 2021 and will be the prototype of the new variant of the freighter, c/n 1653 and will be registered EI-GUL. The ATR 72-600F is the only new large regional freighter on the market. It incorporates all the latest technology featured in the ATR 72-600 Series while boasting a design optimised for freighter operations. The unique capability to carry both bulk and industry-standard Unit Load Devices makes the ATR 72-600F a highly versatile aircraft. The ATR 72-600 in passenger operations already boasts an impressive performance statistics with around 99% in service reliability. The -600 series aircraft was first announced in October 2007 and the first flight was in 2010. The all cargo version was announced in November 2017 with 30 firm orders from FedEx plus 20 options. ASL Airlines have been operating cargo flights on behalf of Fed Ex on their European network since 2002.
The ATR 72-600F can carry seven LD-3 containers or five 88″x108″ pallets and has up to nine vertical cargo nets along the fuselage with attachment points on the floor and lateral tracks. The near nine tonne payload with 75 cubic metres of cargo space and can fly a range of up to 900 nautical miles.
The prototype had its maiden flight on 16th September from Toulouse and spent around two hours in the air. During the flight, crew onboard performed a number of tests to measure the new aircraft’s flight envelope and flight performance. The aircraft will undergo several months of testing before the aircraft in due to be delivered to ASL Airlines and operate in the colours of Fed Ex in early 2021.
