Southern Cross Flight Day Portmarnock, Newfoundland and Beyond

A special aviation heritage event celebrating one of Ireland’s most significant transatlantic milestones is set to take place at Portmarnock on Sunday 28th June, with tickets now almost sold out.

The Southern Cross Flight Day: Portmarnock, Newfoundland and Beyond will run from 2:00pm to 4:30pm at the Portmarnock Resort and Jameson Golf Links. Organised by the Malahide Historical Society, the event commemorates the historic 1930 departure of the Southern Cross aircraft from Portmarnock Beach to Newfoundland.

This landmark flight formed the Atlantic leg of the first circumnavigation of the globe, undertaken by the famous Fokker Trimotor and its crew, including Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith and Captain Paddy Saul. Attendees will hear about the challenges faced during the 32-hour crossing, where navigation relied on basic instruments such as a compass and spirit level, highlighting the extraordinary skill and bravery of early long-distance aviators.

The event promises a fascinating insight into the pioneering era of global aviation, exploring both the technical and human aspects of one of the most ambitious flights of its time. Interest has been exceptionally strong, with all tickets now almost sold out, reflecting the enduring appeal of Ireland’s rich aviation heritage.

For those unable to attend, the strong demand underlines the growing enthusiasm for historical aviation events in Ireland, particularly those tied to internationally significant achievements such as the Southern Cross flight.
