New Chapter Takes Flight at Foynes Flying Boat Museum

The Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum marked a significant milestone on Friday, 12th June with the official opening of several exciting new facilities, reinforcing its position as one of Ireland’s most important aviation heritage attractions.

The occasion brought together a wide cross-section of guests from the local community, tourism and heritage sectors, alongside public representatives and supporters, to celebrate what is a major expansion of the museum’s offering. The new Event & Exhibition Hall, Blair Gallery, and Sheridan Irish Coffee Experience were formally opened by Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, whose continued support for Ireland’s cultural institutions was warmly acknowledged.

The museum also extended sincere thanks to JP and Noreen McManus, whose ongoing generosity has played a vital role in enabling projects that preserve and showcase Ireland’s unique aviation and maritime heritage. Their contribution has once again helped bring an ambitious vision to life.

A strong sense of community was evident throughout the day, with elected representatives, board members, staff, volunteers, and partners in attendance. Special recognition was given to Chairman Eamonn Brennan, the Board of Directors, and the dedicated team behind the scenes whose commitment and hard work made the development possible.

These new additions represent a major enhancement to the visitor experience. The Event & Exhibition Hall will provide a versatile space for gatherings, educational programmes, and cultural events, while the Blair Gallery will highlight compelling stories from aviation history, further strengthening the museum’s role as a custodian of Ireland’s rich aeronautical legacy.

Adding a distinctive flavour to the expansion is the Sheridan Irish Coffee Experience, celebrating the world-famous drink that originated in Foynes during the flying boat era. This immersive element connects aviation history with one of Ireland’s most iconic cultural exports, offering visitors a unique and engaging insight into its origins.

The opening of these facilities marks a new chapter for the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, ensuring it continues to evolve while remaining firmly rooted in the heritage of transatlantic aviation. Visitors from across Ireland and beyond can now look forward to an even more enriching and memorable experience when they step through its doors.
