A petition to reopen Galway Airport has been launched on Change.org in an effort to highlight the importance of this valuable asset, not only to the local Galway community but also to the wider GA community. Galway has been effectively closed since scheduled flights ceased on 31st October 2011, when Aer Arann (later Stobart Air) withdrew services amid financial issues and the withdrawal of public subsidies. The local authorities returned the aerodrome licence in 2013, followed by Galway City and County Councils purchasing the 115‑acre site for €1.1 million.
In 2015, Carnmore Aviation Ltd, part of the Conneely Group, briefly reopened the airport to business jet traffic, but this was only short-lived. Since then, the Airport has only been open to the Galway Flying Club and its members. During the COVID pandemic, the airport was repurposed as a test facility and has also been used for music concerts such as the Galway Summer Sessions. At a recent meeting of Galway County Council, Councillors voted in favour of extending the lease to the Flying for another year until 24th December 2026.
There are moves now to develop a plan to fully reopen the airport, and we hope to be able to share details soon. In the meantime, we’d appreciate it if you could sign the petition to show your support.
