Colm McLoughlin, renowned for his role in establishing and growing Dubai Duty-Free (DDF) into one of the world’s most successful travel retail enterprises, has died aged 81. Born in Ballinasloe, County Galway, McLoughlin started his career in retail in Ireland before becoming a prominent figure in global travel retail.
His career began in retail management with Shannon Duty-Free, the world’s first airport duty-free shop. In 1983, he was invited to Dubai by the government of Dubai to set up a duty-free operation at Dubai International Airport. He initially went to Dubai for a six-month assignment as part of a team from Aer Rianta, but he ended up staying and becoming the Managing Director of Dubai Duty-Free. He led the company until his retirement in May this year.
Under McLoughlin’s leadership, Dubai Duty-Free grew exponentially, from a $20 million business in its first year to over $2 billion in annual sales. He pioneered various marketing and customer service initiatives that have made Dubai Duty Free one of the best-known duty-free retailers globally, contributing significantly to Dubai’s position as a major international travel and tourism hub. McLoughlin also oversaw the expansion of Dubai Duty-Free’s portfolio, including retail spaces at Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport.
Beyond business, McLoughlin has been deeply involved in charitable and sports-related activities in Dubai. Dubai Duty-Free supports numerous community projects, including sports sponsorships and charity initiatives. One of the most prominent events is the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, which has attracted top international players and brought global attention to Dubai’s sporting calendar.
Dubai Duty-Free Managing Director Ramesh Cidambi said: “Colm was a great leader who built an award-winning retail business at Dubai Airport and steered its growth to a US$2 billion business with over 6,000 employees at the time of his retirement. He was a true friend who touched so many lives within the travel retail industry.
“I join our Chairman, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and all of our employees in sending our deepest condolences to Colm’s wife Breeda, his son Niall and his daughters Tyna and Mandy and all of their families. Our thoughts and prayers are with Breeda and the family at this very difficult time.”
