From September 1st, 2024, changes to EU regulations will see the re-introduction of temporary liquid restrictions at airports in the EU. In compliance with the new European Commission directive for EU airports, from the 1st of September, passengers at Irish airports will not be permitted to carry liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in containers greater than 100ml in their cabin baggage through security at the airport. All liquid, aerosol and gels (LAGs) must be stored in containers of 100ml or less and stored in clear transparent bags and taken out of your cabin baggage before going through security. There will be no limit on the number of plastic bags used per passenger.
Exceptions remain in place for essential items over 100ml such as baby products, special dietary needs and medications, which also must be placed in a clear transparent bag, separate from the liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs).
However, these new guidelines do not affect electronic items, such as laptops and phones which can remain in your cabin baggage when going through updated scanner machines that have been installed at Shannon Airport and Ireland West Airport (and some security lanes at Dublin). As airports across the UK and Europe may operate older security scanner systems, passengers are advised to check the liquid restrictions locally at each airport as part of their trip.
In a statement, Ireland West Airport said: “As this is a temporary measure, Ireland West Airport will continue to work closely with the European Commission and the Department of Transport to ensure that all security measures are implemented smoothly and efficiently. Passengers due to travel from September 1st, 2024, onwards are reminded to plan accordingly and ensure that any liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) carried in hand luggage do not exceed the 100ml limit per container and are placed in a clear transparent bag and placed in the tray at security separate to your cabin bag.”
