Aer Lingus Order Two More A320neos

According to the Airbus Orders and Delivery report for November that was published last week, Aer Lingus has ordered two further Airbus A320neo aircraft. Both orders are likely transferred from the existing IAG order book and are due for delivery in 2024. The airline currently operates four of the type EI-NSA/B/C/D having entered service on 28th September 2022.

The Airbus A320neo (neo stands for “new engine option”) is a modernised version of the popular Airbus A320 family of narrow-body, short-to-medium-haul commercial aircraft. It was developed to provide improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and enhanced passenger comfort compared to its predecessors.

Key features of the A320neo include:

  1. Fuel Efficiency: The A320neo incorporates new, more efficient engines. It has two engine options: the Pratt & Whitney PW1000G and the CFM International LEAP-1A engines. These engines offer significant fuel savings (approximately 15-20% reduction in fuel consumption) and reduced carbon emissions compared to previous models.
  2. Enhanced Engines: The PW1000G and LEAP-1A engines feature advanced technology, such as geared turbofan engines and improved aerodynamics, contributing to quieter operations and better performance.
  3. Improved Cabin: The aircraft offers a more spacious cabin with larger overhead storage bins, modernised lighting, and a quieter interior, enhancing passenger comfort and experience.
  4. Range and Performance: It has a longer range than older models, allowing airlines to operate it on short and medium-haul routes efficiently.
  5. Advanced Avionics: The A320neo is equipped with the latest avionics and cockpit technology, including modern flight decks with digital displays and fly-by-wire control systems, improving safety and operational efficiency.
  6. Commonality: The A320neo retains high commonality with previous A320 family models, allowing airlines to easily transition pilots and maintenance personnel from older versions to the neo, reducing training costs and operational complexities.

The A320neo has been popular among airlines worldwide, becoming a significant part of many carriers’ fleets due to its fuel efficiency and operational versatility on various routes. Its combination of modern technology, improved efficiency, and passenger comfort has made it a preferred choice for many airlines operating short to medium-haul flights.
