For many private pilots, the ability to fly confidently in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) represents one of the most valuable skills they can add after gaining their PPL. Waterford Aero Club is making that journey more accessible than ever with a Basic Instrument Rating (BIR) course starting on 25th July 2026, offering a flexible, competency-based pathway to instrument flying. One of the biggest attractions of the BIR is that there is no minimum post-PPL flight hour requirement to begin training, making it an excellent option for recently qualified pilots as well as more experienced aviators looking to expand their capabilities.
Introduced by EASA to provide a more accessible route into instrument flying, the Basic Instrument Rating gives pilots many of the practical privileges associated with a full Instrument Rating while being tailored to the needs of general aviation pilots. The qualification allows pilots to fly IFR, conduct instrument departures and arrivals, and fly instrument approaches throughout EASA airspace. The rating is particularly attractive for pilots who want to increase the utility, flexibility and safety of their flying without committing to the time and cost traditionally associated with a full IR.
Unlike traditional flight training courses that are heavily focused on accumulating prescribed flying hours, the BIR is based on demonstrating competence in key areas of instrument flight. This means students progress by achieving specific standards rather than simply logging time. Waterford Aero Club has embraced this philosophy by conducting a significant proportion of the training in its procedures trainer (simulator). By learning and practising instrument procedures on the ground before moving into the aircraft, pilots can build skills more efficiently and at a lower cost.
The course is divided into three modules:
- Basic attitude instrument flying and general handling.
- Instrument departures, arrivals, holds and approaches.
- En-route IFR procedures.
