TITLE:   “CFM56 Engines“

Alan  began his aviation career with the Aer Lingus Apprentice Class of ’91. He has been a line maintenance engineer for various airlines including Ryanair and Germania.  Alan is currently Technical Director for Willis Lease in Dublin and has spent close to ten years in leasing.

Willis Lease is a premier independent jet engine lessor in the commercial finance space and has been a pioneer in aviation solutions for over 30 years. As of December 31, 2017, the Company had a total lease portfolio consisting of 225 engines and related equipment, 16 aircraft and 7 other leased parts and equipment with a net book value of $1.343 billion in its lease portfolio.

The CFM International CFM56 series is a family of high-bypass turbofan aircraft engines made by CFM International (CFMI), with a thrust range of 18,500 to 34,000 pounds-force (82 to 150 kilonewtons). CFMI is a 50–50 joint-owned company of Safran Aircraft Engines (formerly known as Snecma), France, and GE Aviation (GE), United States.

The CFM56 first ran in 1974.Different versions have been used on re-engined KC-135s and DC-8s, on the E-3D and E-6, on the B737-300 and later, on the A320 series and A340

Alan’s talk will outline the history of the CFM56 model by model with focus on their strengths and weaknesses focussing on deterioration and failures based on the experience of Willis Lease whose engines run in every environment type for almost every airline in the world. In addition he intends to discuss the  current CFM56-7B fan blades issues.

Mark Dwyer

Mark is an airline pilot flying the Boeing 737 for a major European airline. In addition he is also a Type Rating Instructor, Type Rating Examiner and Base Training Captain on the B737. Outside of commercial flying Mark enjoys flying light aircraft from the smallest 3 Axis microlights up to heavier singles. He is also an instructor and EASA Examiner on single engines and a UK CAA Examiner. He flies the Chipmunk for the Irish Historic Flight Foundation (IHFF). Mark became the Chairman of the National Microlight Association of Ireland (NMAI) in 2013 and has overseen a massive growth in the organisation. In this role he has worked at local and national levels. In 2015, Mark won ‘Upcoming Aviation Professional Award’ at the Aviation Industry Awards sponsored by the IAA. Mark launched this website back in 2002 while always managing the website, he has also been Editor and Deputy Editor of FlyingInIreland Magazine from 2005 to 2015.
