Fri03Apr2015Mon06Apr2015Tandragee Airfield, Co. Armagh
Flight of Hope 3rd to 6th April 2015
In March 2013 our daughter Christine was diagnosed with a brain tumour. She has undergone an urgent operation to remove the tumour followed by radiotherapy, chemotherapy and continues to fight this devastating disease with every day bringing its own challenges.
Christine and our family would really appreciate your support for The Brain Tumour Charity as cancer touches most families at some time in their lives. Every year this charity funds pioneering research into better ways to earlier diagnose and treat brain tumours and have given fantastic support to our family as they do for so many others.
Members of the Kernan Valley Flying Club and myself, Raphael, intend to fly around the coast of Ireland (weather permitting) on the Easter weekend from the 3rd to 6th April with as many aircraft and crews as possible.
Our journey of almost 1000 miles will start at Newcastle Co Down and follow the coast clockwise round Ireland, stopping at as many airfields along the way as possible (our route and full updates will be posted on Kernan Aviation’s Facebook page) to accept donations and raise awareness of the increase in cancer in UK and Ireland. So if you see an aircraft overhead think DONATE!
So how can you DONATE?
Donations can be made through Justgiving directly or via our Facebook page or website (see below) where you will find links to make the donation process even easier. You can also give donations to any of the pilots and crew who are members of the Kernan Valley Flying Club.
If you live in the UK you can also text your donation.
Example
To donate £5 text KVFC56 £5 on 70070
To donate £10 text KVFC56 £10 on 70070
To donate £50 text KVFC56 £50 on 70070
Don't forget to tick the gift aid box to maximize your donation.
https://www.justgiving.com/teams/KVFC
http://www.kernanaviation.co.uk
Together we can make a difference.
All donations from our Justgiving page will go straight to the relevant Charities, these will be gratefully received for further research into this devastating disease and to provide care in the local community.
Thanking you in anticipation,
The O’Carroll Family/Kernan Valley Flying Club

Sat30May2015Spanish Point Airfield, Co. Clare
Spanish Point airfield is open to visitors on Saturday 30th May, weather permitting. Aligning with the NMAI Around Ireland Rally, the club has decided to hold their Fly In on the Saturday.
This grass strip is about 450m long and the field is generally dry. However, if there is prolonged rain during the days preceeding the event, it may be too wet 'under-wheels' to hold the event. It is relatively easy to find directly south of Miltown Malbay and to the east of the Spanish Point Road. The bright red wind sock pin points the spot.
Camping areas are provided and festivities shall continue after the end of VFR in the town of Miltown Malbay!

Sat18Jul2015Sun19Jul2015Enniskillen Airport, Co. Fermanagh**** Air Racing is returning to Enniskillen Airport ****In July 2013 the Airport hosted a round of the Royal Areo Club Air Racing. Due to the success of this event the Royal Aero Club have confirmed their return on the 18th and 19th July 2015.Air racing in the UK is certainly as old as aviation itself and the magnificent trophies competitors race for each year carry some pioneers in the history of flight. Whether pilot, enthusiast or spectator the annual series of races around the UK provide a great opportunity to experience real close quarter racing.Further details will be announced as they become available. The Website of the Royal Aero Club Records Racing and Rally Association, affectionately known by members as the RRR’s can be viewed by clicking here.

Wed25Nov20158:00 pmWynns Hotel, Abbey Street, Dublin 1
This lecture is under the auspices of the Royal Aeronautical Society Republic of Ireland Branch and all are welcome (no charge). The lecturer is excellent and his knowledge extends to the often colourful after-life (of those who survived).
SPEAKER: Mr. Joe Gleeson
TITLE: "Irish airmen of World War I“
SYNOPSIS:
Several of the highest scoring scout (fighter) aces of the First World War, such as Mannock, Hazel and McElroy, were Irish. Many critical wartime aeronautical developments were made by Irishmen, e.g. John Cyril Porte's flying boats and Neville Florian Usborne's airships.
Many Irishmen who served with the RFC, RNAS and RAF in World War I went on to play a notable role in aviation history in Chile, Lithuania and Ireland during the inter-war years, with yet others still attaining senior rank in the RAF in World War II.
The lecture would seek to address the contribution of the Irish aces to the Allied cause, but will focus on a number of squadrons with a significant Irish contingent.
It will also seek to briefly cover Huston's role in Chile and the wartime service of the early Irish Air Corps pilots and observers from an RAF background, e.g. William Jasper McSweeney, Charles F Russell, William Percy Delamere, James C Fitzmaurice, Wilfrid Hardy and renowned Camel ace Oscar Heron.

Come and find out more about a Pilot Career at British Airways
Here at British Airways we are growing. More opportunities to join our pilot team are now present. We are continually introducing new aircraft including the Airbus A380 and revolutionary Boeing 787. We are actively recruiting now and for 2016 we envisage over 350 pilots joining the fraternity, with over half of these vacancies requiring direct entry onto our longhaul fleets.
We're coming out to meet experienced pilots who are interested in finding out more about what we have to offer in what we hope will be a relaxed and informal setting. The events will be run by the BA pilot recruitment team, and a small team of line pilots who are keen to meet you and to talk about life as a pilot with us.
This roadshow will follow a different style to previously. There will be a rolling 'drop in' opportunity available during the day as well as two set presentation times. Depending on the number of people present at any one time we will answer queries individually or through a wider reaching presentation. We have planned presentations at 10:00 and 16:00 with a 2 hour lunchtime drop in session 12:00 - 14:00 for general questions. Please do come and join us. If you can please book for the session you wish to attend so that we can ensure we have sufficient people on hand to give you the personal service you deserve.
The presentations are aimed at experienced pilots including those who hold type ratings on any of the aircraft BA currently operates or has on order.
At this time, we are not seeking attendees who are low-hour or trainee pilots, but if you fall into one of these categories we'd be delighted to meet you at one of the other events we support including Pilot Careers Live, formerly the Flyer Professional Flight Training Exhibition.
We really look forward to meeting you. Don't worry about dressing up for the occasion, we'll be going for a smart casual approach to keep the event relaxed!

Sat26Mar2016Sun27Mar2016Tipperary Racecourse
Tipperary Vintage Rally and Family Fun Day.
March 26th/27th 2016
This Easter once again sees the Tipperary Vintage and Family Day go ahead at Tipperary Racecourse with what is expected to be one of the biggest turnouts of classic and vintage cars, tractors bikes and trucks in the events history. Bolstered by last year's record attendance of exhibits the organisers are extending the display area to ensure that all can be comfortably accommodated in the racecourse grounds.
In addition to the fine collection of cherished machines there will be a display of army vehicles, a dog show, aerobatic display, large autojumble, children's activities, trade stands, and much else besides, with all the money raised going directly to South Tipperary Hospice. The show has raised over €100,000 during the years it has been running which has brought an enormous amount of relief and comfort to those who have suffered grave illness and their families.
The Saturday before the main event is now widely recognised as a bikers day with a Honda Fifty run starting off at 4pm and a supper to follow upon their return. Bikes of all types and age are welcome to take part in this activity which kicks off the riding season with an excellent money raising activity.
In addition to the older vehicles there is a growing number of modified cars attending which is a class of exhibit that is becoming ever more popular. The time and expense that goes into preparing many of these vehicles is worthy of recognition and anyone with a well specified car is more than welcome to bring it along and show it to a wider audience.
On a final note the organisers would like to reassure all their regular visitors and exhibitors that although they can no longer describe the weekend as a rally from 2017 onwards the event will continue in the same style and format well into the future.
For further details please contact Steve Thornton on 087 7579358 or Jack Leonard on 0862716931

IAA RPAS/Drone Examiner & Flight Instructor/Aer Lingus A330 Pilot
RPAS = Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems
TITLE: "Drones: Aviation's Wild Child “
DATE: Wednesday 20th April 2016 at 8pm
VENUE: Abbey Room, Wynn’s Hotel Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1.
SYNOPSIS:
In addition to being a drone enthusiast and drone service entrepreneur, Mark is an RPAS Flight Examiner with the IAA and Chief RPAS Instructor at RPAS Training International (www.rti.ie). His RPAS regulatory knowledge sees him working on RPAS Working Groups at a national level with the IALPA Safety & Technical Committee and at the European level with the European Cockpit Association (ECA). Having honed his skills as a pilot instructor in the Irish Air Corps he now flies commercial long haul with Aer Lingus.
Drones are the current tech fad and their potential seem limited only by imagination. Consumer and commercial users are ramping up their adoption of drones while big business and research funding is starting to pour in. But who are these drone operators and where do they come from? In this presentation Mark will introduce drones and look at what they do, how they fly and what if any the impact on the traditional manned aviation sector will be.

A V I A T I O N - E V E N T........ Lufthansa Calling – A Final Opportunity.............
Airliner Experience has been granted permission by world class aircraft maintenance provider, Lufthansa Technik - Hamburg for an Enthusiasts Group Visit to the impressive Hamburg facility.
This Once Off visit will take place on Thursday March 2nd 2017 and is a one day event avoiding the requirement of an overnight Hotel stay and a second day of annual leave, thus reducing costs and delivering better value for each.
Sadly, the world leader in aircraft maintenance, Lufthansa Technik is due to wind-up operations of the Lufthansa fleet and other third party airliners at the Hamburg facility during this year 2017. The ending of commercial airliner maintenance at Hamburg will see the company providing services for private jets only. Our visit will be our final chance to experience the famous facility.

Known for their vast B747 fleet, of which the 400 series and new 747-8 Intercontinental are flown. And not forgetting their specialist Freighter fleet of B777-F’s and MD-11F’s of which several are still flying. Third party airliners always hold a surprise.
For this final opportunity to visit the iconic German Aircraft Maintenance Mega Base and view some of it’s secrets along with a possible close up inspection of an A380 or B747 during a one-day visit ..........Don’t miss out – Act now !

The pilot training journey
Training to be a pilot is a unique learning experience, which is character-building, complex, and challenging. The training demands high levels of self-discipline and determination, across a variety of physiological and practical skill-sets. But success will reward those who meet the required high standards, with a well-respected, exciting and fulfilling career.
Ask any professional pilot and they will tell you… despite the early morning starts in the depths of winter, delayed flight schedules and irregular work patterns, they would not change their career for any other.
By visiting this website you could have already made the first step to becoming a pilot. Take the next step and book your tickets now. Make it part of your checklist!
Who should attend?
- Anyone with an ambition to be an airline or military pilot.
- Anyone currently in education with an aspiration to be a professional pilot.
- Career change? If you are considering a career in the skies and want to know where to start, Pilot Careers Live is a ‘must attend’ event.
- Military pilots leaving the service, now considering a new career with the airlines.
- School/College Career Advisors – An opportunity to gather reference material about the career.
- Those interested in commercial helicopter flying opportunities.
You do not need to be an expert on pilot training to attend. The exhibition will equip you with enough knowledge about the pilot training process, ensuring you get the best possible, independent advice at the start of your career.

Sat15Jul20171:00 pmDerryogue Airfield, Kilkeel, Co. Down
Fly-in information 15th of July 2017!
As it stands the weather looks to be in our favour for our Charity Fly-In BBQ this year.
Information for Pilots:
NOTAM:
Runway Designation is now 01/19, and the North side has been extended giving a total length of 790m.Freecall 123.450 for airfield information and joining instructions. Derryogue is an uncontrolled airport so all communications from the ground are for information purposes only, all manoeuvres are at pilot discretion. We will be as helpful as possible with setting up the circuit and assisting all aircraft on arrival and departure. As with previous fly-ins maintain a good visual awareness, the circuit can be very busy with up to 5 or 6 aircraft at any given time. Maintain good separation and do 'S' turns if necessary to delay the approach. Be aware aircraft may also be backtracking. Most aircraft will be arriving about 1300 local time.
All circuits will be done to the WEST of the airfield. Left hand circuit if 01 is in use and right hand circuit if 19 is in use. Please try to avoid overflying the small village on the left of the 01 approach and the houses to the East of the runway, our neighbours will greatly appreciate this. Please find attached a photo of airfield and areas to avoid.
On the ground there will be marshallers to assist with parking.
For departures and Go-Arounds we would ask that runway heading is maintained until 500ft AGL for noise abatement then make a left or right turnout as required.
An alternative airfield is "Aughrim", which is 1.8 miles North of Derryogue landing on runway 35 only.
Enjoy the fantastic the scenery the Mournes have to offer on the way! As well as the top notch BBQ and deserts. Please give generously! Check out the photos below of our great airfield and the fantastic turnout in 2016!
Information for everyone else:
We ask that dogs are not brought to the day, as they can run into harms way and cause problems.
Also aircraft can be dangerous and fragile. Never approach an aircraft that has a running engine, propellors can become invisible when turning. Please respect people's airplanes, do not touch any aircraft or any propellor, propellors can start without warning if moved. Do not cross the runway unless escorted at the designated crossing point.
Please give generously on the way in as we do this every year in aid of charity. The BBQ is guaranteed to be one of the best in the country so you don't want to miss out! We hope you enjoy your day as you see a vast range of aircraft from all over the island of Ireland.

New Arrangements for the EIIF Summer Rally Fly-in
Having been unlucky with weather this June, we have decided to hold our Summer Rally Fly-in on the weekend we had previously flagged for the Harvest Breakfast Fly-in: so the Summer Rally Fly-in is now slated for 26th and 27th August. All of the other arrangements remain the same: Food and shelter, in the form of a marquee, will be provided. People living in the immediate locality will be invited and usually like to attend, so this is our chance to show them what we do and make them welcome.
This year will feature a spot-landing competition with a prize of a €50 voucher for the most accurate full-stop landing. Announce your intention to participate and receive instructions from EIIF radio on approach. If you are not happy with the first one, you can take off again for another go!
PPR required and available from Aidan Power (Tel 087 676 5207) and aidansec@gmail.com. An updated airfield information sheet is now available at this link and in the Downloads section. Further updates will be posted as comments to this post.
Our intention is to plan a replacement date for the Harvest Breakfast Fly-in later on towards the end of the flying season, and to announce it here and by email bulletin in due course.

“We are looking forward to bringing IASS back to Europe,” said Foundation President and CEO Jon Beatty. “Dublin is a wonderful city and it is fitting that the industry’s premier annual safety event will be hosted by Aer Lingus, one of the industry’s premier carriers,” he said.
“I am delighted and honored that the Flight Safety Foundation has chosen Dublin as the venue and Aer Lingus as the host airline for the 2017 International Air Safety Summit,” Aer Lingus Chief Executive Stephen Kavanagh said. “Aer Lingus has been a member of the Flight Safety Foundation since 1999 and over the past 17 years has played a very active role in the foundation’s important work. I and my Aer Lingus colleagues look forward to welcoming the delegates next year to our home town of Dublin, the gateway to the North Atlantic.”
Capt. Conor Nolan, the airline’s corporate safety and resilience manager, is a member of FSF’s Board of Governors. He also serves as the chairman of the Board’s Audit and Finance Committee.
IASS was last held in Europe in 2010 in Milan, Italy. The Foundation’s European Advisory Committee, along with its International Advisory Committee, will take an active role in planning IASS 2017.
Aer Lingus is a unit of IAG (International Airlines Group), which also is the parent company of British Airways, Iberia and Vueling. IAG is one of the world’s largest airline groups with 525 aircraft flying to 255 destinations and carrying almost 95 million passengers each year. The theme of the 2017 conference is prompted by this year being the 30th anniversary of the earliest steps towards aviation liberalisation in Europe (the 1987 first ‘aviation package’). This year’s conference will seek to use the lessons of the last three decades of reform to propose an agenda for the future, facing new challenges like the rise of protectionism after Brexit and Trump and new technologies disrupting the development of the industry.
The conference will cover the following issues:
● The third package in retrospective: Did consumers gain (and legacy airlines lose)?
● Restructuring the Industry: Changes in the Business Models, Alliances, Mergers and Competition Policy
● What’s Next Europe? Brexit and Disintegration of the Aviation Market?
● What’s Next Capacity? Inadequate airports and the slow process towards the Single Sky.
● What’s Next Innovation? The impact of disruptive technology
The European Aviation Conference (EAC) offers a meeting place for industry, researchers and government officials from across Europe and around the world to discuss policy-relevant issues in aviation.

RAeS Public Lecture
'The Airbus A320 Fan Cowl Door Case: A Human Factors Scenario Analysis'
Speakers:
- Mrs Anna V. Chatzi | PhD candidate, University of Southern Queensland.
- Dr Kyriakos I. Kourousis, MRAeS, CEng | Senior Lecturer, Programme Director Aircraft Maintenance & Airworthiness Engineering, University of Limerick.
Synopsis:
Several Airbus A320 family engine fan cowl door losses have occurred in the past due to uninspected unlocked situations that have occurred in service. This issue is known to the industry for almost 18 years, however it has not been addressed adequately by the aircraft manufacturer and the various operators and regulating authorities. Airbus, in an attempt to address the issue permanently, proceeded in redesigning the FCD locking arrangement and
control philosophy, which were subsequently adopted by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in 2015 and 2016, as Airworthiness Directives (Ads). However, as part of the EASA consultation process, a number of major operators (United Airlines, American Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Air Canada) have expressed reservations on the effectiveness of the Airbus redesign, on the basis of human factors issues, potential financial impact on operations and implementation cost. This brief paper intends to examine and discuss in a systematic way the possible operational and safety implications that the fan cowl doors modification can have in aircraft maintenance practice. It identifies issues in relation to this modification, introduced by Airbus and the European Aviation Safety Agency, which may prove problematic from the point of view of safety effectiveness and disruption of operations. An array of error-prone scenarios are presented and analysed under the prism of human factors in a non-exhaustive qualitative scenario analysis. Furthermore, a number of accident prevention solutions are proposed for each of the scenario examined, in view of the acceptance and implementation of this modification by operators. -

In Search of The Beluga..............
Airliner Experience has been granted permission by European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, for an Enthusiasts Group Visit to the impressive Airbus UK - Broughton facility.
This Once Off visit will take place on February 8th 2018.
When it comes to Airbus Industries the big names are Toulouse and Hamburg. Often Spain and the UK are forgotten about. The Broughton facility in North Wales is where the wings for the giant A380, new to the market A350, the A330 and A320 family are manufactured along with other major components.
Transportation of these enormous and awkward sections is performed by a complicated logistics operation combining air, sea and road. By air it’s the role of the Airbus A300-600ST Beluga fleet to deliver the goods. It is not often members of the public gain access to Airbus UK – Broughton. Our group visit will see us enter the manufacturing facility where we will view the wing production process among other operations.
If an Airbus Beluga is present during our visit, there is a possibility we may view the aircraft. With only five in existence the Beluga is truly a rare aircraft. A replacement for the ageing A300-600ST Beluga is currently being developed by Airbus based on the A330-200. With flight testing planned to begin during 2018 the Beluga XL is expected to enter service with the manufacturer in 2019. Our visit may be the final chance to experience the original Beluga at this famous facility.
For this unique opportunity to visit the iconic Airbus UK production facility and view some of it’s secrets along with a possible Airbus Beluga viewing - Don’t miss out – Act now !

Further details HERE.
Speaker: Julian Scarfe
Venue: Finnstown Castle Hotel, Lucan
Date: Thursday 3rd May, 19:30
Julian Scarfe is a Vice President of Europe Air Sports, which represents national aeroclubs and pan-European organisations at EASA and the European Commission.
Other than a cerebral few, most of us quickly switch off when the subject turns to aviation regulation. But this leaves basic but important questions unanswered. This session provides a great opportunity to get answers to such questions as:
- "Annex I"? - "Annex II"? What do they mean and why is it important to me? What is their future under EASA?
- Why does EASA not allow me to just build or restore any aircraft that I like?
- Why can't I just fly anywhere in my Permit aircraft and how can I get 'freedom of the skies' despite EASA?
- What are the options for pilots licenses under EASA and how do I train for them and maintain them.
- What privileges do they provide?
- I have heard EASA are out to destroy permit aviation. Are they?
Julian will also reflect on the next stages following the completion of the new EASA Basic Regulation and how permit aviation will be effected by the changes. His views on how small permit associations such as ours can 'punch above our weight' will be important in helping us to influence the implementing rules that will give effect to the new BR.
The possible departure of Britain from EASA is another hot topic exercising our minds at present and once again, Julian is well placed to provide informed speculation as to the effects and how it can be handled.
MORE INFORMATION...
Europe Air Sports
Established in 1988 as a non-profit organisation, Europe Air Sports goal mission is to represent the interests of pilots and light aircraft owners / operators in civil aviation regulatory developments.EAS supports a European regulatory environment that is proportionate to the complexity of aircraft and the nature of flight operation. A minimal amount of regulation to ensure flight safety, access to airspace, free movement and efficient and cost-effective organisation for operations, are of paramount importance for air sports to survive and thrive
ILAS is a member of EFLEVA at European level, which in turn is a member of EAS.
Julian Scarfe
Julian has been engaged in the innovative safety regulation of general aviation for more than 8 years. He flies a 1966 Twin Comanche around the UK and Europe, under IFR and VFR, for both business and leisure.
He is a proponent of total system safety management, based on evidence and risk, and participates in a number of strategic safety groups at the EASA, including the GA Task Force and the GA Sectorial Committee. He chaired the rulemaking group at EASA that developed aircrew and operational requirements for the use of Performance Based Navigation. In 2012, he was a member of the Challenge Panel that undertook the Red Tape Challenge of the UK's regulation of GA. More recently, he organised and facilitated a workshop at EASA aimed at alleviating the regulatory/certification requirements for electronic conspicuity deployment in GA.
In 2016 and 2017, he was closely involved with the recast of the Basic Regulation, including an invitation to discuss specific aspects of it in the Council's Aviation Working Group.

This exciting Tour will take place on Tuesday May 15th 2018.
The Visit
The reasonably ‘new-comer’ to the airline industry, Stobart Air has essentially been operating the regional branch of Aer Lingus. Up until now, the single aircraft type fleet has enabled the airline to become experts in turboprop commuter airliners, using the venerable ATR. The 42 & 72 series of ATR have carved out their own niche for the airline and are soon to be joined by Stobart’s first jet aircraft, the Embraer E-195.
Once Airport Security has been accessed, the group will enter the enormous Hangar 6 during the busy maintenance programme. Stobart Air Engineering staff will be on hands to meet and greet. The group will enjoy a company presentation and Q&A session. The aim is to enjoy an ATR in close proximity with an overall inspection of the type.
For this exciting opportunity to experience the often over-looked ATR regional aircraft, seen often performing services into and out of Dublin Airport but rarely explored up close in a hangar environment, Don’t miss out – Join us !
If interested please let me know ASAP
Registration process will be through Airliner Experience.

Information for Pilots:
Freecall 123.450 for airfield information and joining instructions. Derryogue is an uncontrolled airport so all communications from the ground are for information purposes only, all manoeuvres are at pilot discretion. We will be as helpful as possible with setting up the circuit and assisting all aircraft on arrival and departure. Maintain a good visual awareness, the circuit can be very busy with up to 5 or 6 aircraft at any given time. Maintain good separation and do 'S' turns if necessary on the approach. Be aware aircraft may also be backtracking. Most aircraft will be arriving about 1300 local time.
All circuits will be done to the WEST of the airfield. Left hand circuit if 36 is in use and right hand circuit if 18 is in use. On the aerial view attached below there are a few highlighted areas which we would like all pilots to avoid to create as little disruption for the neighbours as possible, this is gratefully appreciated.
On the ground there will be marshallers to assist with parking.
For departures and Go-Arounds we would ask that runway heading is maintained until 500ft AGL for noise abatement then make a left or right turnout as required.
An alternative airfield is "Aughrim", which is 1.8 niles North of Derryogue landing on runway 35 only.
Enjoy the fantastic the scenery the Mournes have to offer on the way!

In 1908 in Maryborough/Portlaoise, Ireland, Frank & Louis Aldritt, William Rogers and John Conroy commenced work on a Bleriot-style Flying Machine - the First Plane to be built and flown in what became the Republic of Ireland. This plane, safely stored throughout the turbulent years of the 1900s, including two World Wars, the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, eventually disappeared and was lost to the town for over 40 years until Joe Rogers, in tribute to his father, William, one of the original craftsmen, began his search to locate the record-breaking machine.
Teddy Fennelly and Alan Phelan will be giving a talk on the Portlaoise Plane (Aldritts' Monoplane) at the Midlands park Hotel on Thursday, March 28 at 8pm.

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in association with Occasional Press are delighted to announce the launch of This Flight Tonight by Tony Curtis & illustrated by David Lilburn on Wednesday 24th April at 5.30pm.
This Flight Tonight is published to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Alcock and Brown flight by Occasional Press in collaboration with Ballynahinch Castle. On the 15th of June 1919, a Sunday morning, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown landed their Vickers Atlantic Vimy in Connemara, close to the Marconi Transmitting Station on Derrigimlagh bog, a few miles beyond the town of Clifden. A plane had completed the very first non-stop flight of 1,900 miles across the vast emptiness of the Atlantic Ocean from Newfoundland to Ireland. In a weave of archive documentation with his original narratives and poems, poet Tony Curtis explores the remarkable story of Alcock and Brown’s daring and dangerous journey into the unknown. His vivid account is packed with fascinating details of the flight and also gives us insights into the personalities of the two men, picking up their lives in the wake of the First World War - a war in which they had both fought and which had finally ground to its end barely seven months before they undertook their renowned flight out into the Newfoundland night and on into History. The book is published in a paperback edition of 500 and in a special hardback limited edition of 150 carrying an original print by David Lilburn and Tony Curtis, 125 of which are available for sale.Paperback edition: €22.00Hardback edition: €45.00 -

About the event
United Technologies Research Centre is at the forefront of the development of new technologies enabling the next generation of air-travel, which will see a transition to more electric and potentially, all electric aircraft.
In this presentation Dr Diarmaid Hogan and Dr Ray Foley will present an overview of the challenges facing the industry as it journeys towards an electric future and the potential solutions and technology requirements needed to achieve this ambitious goal. The transition from hydraulic and pneumatic systems to electric systems, and from conventional propulsion to hybrid-electric propulsion places UTC and UTRC in a unique position globally to deliver technologies supporting the future of air travel. This will be a key element in the contribution of the aerospace industry towards reducing greenhouse emissions, improve operating costs, lower noise, and improve reliability.
About the speakers
Dr Diarmaid Hogan is a Senior Research Scientist at United Technologies Research Centre (UTRC) Ireland, where he is member of the Power Electronics Research group. He received his PhD in Power Electronics in 2017 from University College Cork, where he was the recipient of the Irish Research Council Enterprise Partnership Scholarship. At UTRC, he is involved in a number of projects spanning areas of hardware-in-the-loop and rapid prototyping testing for aerospace applications, advanced machine controls, modelling and control development for aerospace applications.
Dr Ray Foley is the Site Director at UTRC Ireland, where he has overall responsibility for the operations and management of United Technologies Corporation’s (UTC) European research hub. Ray began his career at UTRC in 2010, and has been involved in R&D activities supporting the various business units of UTC. Most recently he was Project Lead for the Collins Aerospace Systems program at UTRC. He has a PhD degree in Power Electronics (2007) from University College Cork. He has been a participant in several National and EU funded R&D projects. He is the author/co-author of over 30 conference and journal publications.

You are all very welcome to our annual fly in BBQ. Last year we had 80+ aircraft from all over the U.K. and Ireland visiting. For folks travelling from mainland U.K. we can help arrange transport and accommodation if required! The airfield has now been extended to 790m of good grass. Aim to arrive between 12-2pm, but obviously we can accommodate early or late arrivals. Perhaps make a weekend of flying in Ireland! Hope to see you there!
Airfield details are as follows: N: 54.03.041 W: 006.01.786
Runway 01/19
Dimensions 790m x 12m grass
Airfield Elevation: 68 ft amsl
Frequency: 123.45 Mhz
For further details please contact Gary Nicholson +44 7740 984246 Greg Nicholson +44 7802 460966
Information for Pilots: Freecall 123.450 for airfield information and joining instructions.
Left hand circuit if 01 is in use and right hand circuit if 19 is in use.
An alternative airfield is "Aughrim", which is 1.8 miles North of Derryogue landing on runway 35 only. Enjoy the fantastic the scenery the Mournes have to offer on the way!
Information for everyone else: We ask that dogs are not brought to the day, as they can run into harms way and cause problems.

Aviation is a force for economic and social development, encourages investment, stimulates infrastructure expansion that benefits various industries and has significant domestic and international economic linkages. These benefits, however, are provided at a high environmental cost. Locally, communities around airports often suffer from noise and air pollution. Around the globe, the carbon intensity of the aviation sector has posed significant challenges with respect to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
This taster lecture discusses:
- The environmental performance of the aviation industry
- The public reaction to aviation’s impact on the environment
- How regulators and various stakeholders have reacted to the pressure to control and mitigate negative externalities
- The complexity of environmental KPIs
Presenter: Dr Marina Efthymiou, Program Chair of MSc Aviation Leadership
Dr Marina Efthymiou is Assistant professor in Aviation Management and the course director of MSc Management (Aviation Leadership) at Dublin City University. Prior to this, she was working for the University of West London and before that for EUROCONTROL – the International Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation based in Brussels.

About this Event
We are bringing together aviation experts to discuss wellbeing solutions around the human factors and safety challenges.
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
This year, the European Aviation Wellbeing Conference is organised by the European Aviation Wellbeing Committee, a non-profit organisation established to reduce the gap and act as a mediator between regulators, organisations and aviation professionals to enhance safety and resilience.
The conference brings together a diverse range of aviation leaders sharing the same vision towards integrating resilience, and improving both mental and physical performance within the aviation industry.
"We hold a strong belief that only from personal experience in the industry and a deep understanding of our specific environment, we can bring solutions that are practical and sustainable and that matches the daily challenges of our industry. Only through collective cooperation we can influence sustainable change" - Valentina Fitzpatrick, EAWC Founder.
The EAWC conference is the only platform that focuses on the human challenges, and uses its own sources and talent within the industry to deliver a message of transformation and growth into a new holistic culture in aviation.
Last year it was highlighted the well-known challenges in our industry. This year, the discussion is moving forward taking positive action focusing on both practical and theoretical solutions that come from the core of our industry.
Who will participate
- Airline Directors, Management & Supervisors
- Approved Training Organisations (ATO’s)
