Thu28Mar20198:00 pmMidlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise
In 1908 in Maryborough/Portlaoise, Ireland, Frank & Louis Aldritt, William Rogers and John Conroy commenced work on a Bleriot-style Flying Machine - the First Plane to be built and flown in what became the Republic of Ireland. This plane, safely stored throughout the turbulent years of the 1900s, including two World Wars, the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, eventually disappeared and was lost to the town for over 40 years until Joe Rogers, in tribute to his father, William, one of the original craftsmen, began his search to locate the record-breaking machine.
Teddy Fennelly and Alan Phelan will be giving a talk on the Portlaoise Plane (Aldritts' Monoplane) at the Midlands park Hotel on Thursday, March 28 at 8pm.

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel in association with Occasional Press are delighted to announce the launch of This Flight Tonight by Tony Curtis & illustrated by David Lilburn on Wednesday 24th April at 5.30pm.
This Flight Tonight is published to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Alcock and Brown flight by Occasional Press in collaboration with Ballynahinch Castle. On the 15th of June 1919, a Sunday morning, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown landed their Vickers Atlantic Vimy in Connemara, close to the Marconi Transmitting Station on Derrigimlagh bog, a few miles beyond the town of Clifden. A plane had completed the very first non-stop flight of 1,900 miles across the vast emptiness of the Atlantic Ocean from Newfoundland to Ireland. In a weave of archive documentation with his original narratives and poems, poet Tony Curtis explores the remarkable story of Alcock and Brown’s daring and dangerous journey into the unknown. His vivid account is packed with fascinating details of the flight and also gives us insights into the personalities of the two men, picking up their lives in the wake of the First World War - a war in which they had both fought and which had finally ground to its end barely seven months before they undertook their renowned flight out into the Newfoundland night and on into History. The book is published in a paperback edition of 500 and in a special hardback limited edition of 150 carrying an original print by David Lilburn and Tony Curtis, 125 of which are available for sale.Paperback edition: €22.00Hardback edition: €45.00 -

About the event
United Technologies Research Centre is at the forefront of the development of new technologies enabling the next generation of air-travel, which will see a transition to more electric and potentially, all electric aircraft.
In this presentation Dr Diarmaid Hogan and Dr Ray Foley will present an overview of the challenges facing the industry as it journeys towards an electric future and the potential solutions and technology requirements needed to achieve this ambitious goal. The transition from hydraulic and pneumatic systems to electric systems, and from conventional propulsion to hybrid-electric propulsion places UTC and UTRC in a unique position globally to deliver technologies supporting the future of air travel. This will be a key element in the contribution of the aerospace industry towards reducing greenhouse emissions, improve operating costs, lower noise, and improve reliability.
About the speakers
Dr Diarmaid Hogan is a Senior Research Scientist at United Technologies Research Centre (UTRC) Ireland, where he is member of the Power Electronics Research group. He received his PhD in Power Electronics in 2017 from University College Cork, where he was the recipient of the Irish Research Council Enterprise Partnership Scholarship. At UTRC, he is involved in a number of projects spanning areas of hardware-in-the-loop and rapid prototyping testing for aerospace applications, advanced machine controls, modelling and control development for aerospace applications.
Dr Ray Foley is the Site Director at UTRC Ireland, where he has overall responsibility for the operations and management of United Technologies Corporation’s (UTC) European research hub. Ray began his career at UTRC in 2010, and has been involved in R&D activities supporting the various business units of UTC. Most recently he was Project Lead for the Collins Aerospace Systems program at UTRC. He has a PhD degree in Power Electronics (2007) from University College Cork. He has been a participant in several National and EU funded R&D projects. He is the author/co-author of over 30 conference and journal publications.

Sat20Jul20191:00 pmKilkeel, Co. Down
You are all very welcome to our annual fly in BBQ. Last year we had 80+ aircraft from all over the U.K. and Ireland visiting. For folks travelling from mainland U.K. we can help arrange transport and accommodation if required! The airfield has now been extended to 790m of good grass. Aim to arrive between 12-2pm, but obviously we can accommodate early or late arrivals. Perhaps make a weekend of flying in Ireland! Hope to see you there!
Airfield details are as follows: N: 54.03.041 W: 006.01.786
Runway 01/19
Dimensions 790m x 12m grass
Airfield Elevation: 68 ft amsl
Frequency: 123.45 Mhz
For further details please contact Gary Nicholson +44 7740 984246 Greg Nicholson +44 7802 460966
Information for Pilots: Freecall 123.450 for airfield information and joining instructions. Derryogue is an uncontrolled airport so all communications from the ground are for information purposes only, all manoeuvres are at pilot discretion. We will be as helpful as possible with setting up the circuit and assisting all aircraft on arrival and departure. Maintain a good visual awareness, the circuit can be very busy with up to 5 or 6 aircraft at any given time. Maintain good separation and do 'S' turns if necessary on the approach. Be aware aircraft may also be backtracking. Most aircraft will be arriving about 1300 local time.
All circuits will be done to the WEST of the airfield. Left hand circuit if 01 is in use and right hand circuit if 19 is in use. On the aerial view attached below there are a few highlighted areas which we would like all pilots to avoid to create as little disruption for the neighbours as possible, this is gratefully appreciated. On the ground there will be marshallers to assist with parking.
For departures and Go-Arounds we would ask that runway heading is maintained until 500ft AGL for noise abatement then make a left or right turnout as required. An alternative airfield is "Aughrim", which is 1.8 miles North of Derryogue landing on runway 35 only. Enjoy the fantastic the scenery the Mournes have to offer on the way!
Information for everyone else: We ask that dogs are not brought to the day, as they can run into harms way and cause problems. Also aircraft can be dangerous and fragile. Never approach an aircraft that has a running engine, propellors can become invisible when turning. Please respect people's airplanes, do not touch any aircraft or any propellor, propellors can start without warning if moved. Do not cross the runway unless escorted at the designated crossing point.
