August was another record-breaking month at Dublin Airport as it welcomed a total of 3.8 million passengers – a 1% increase on the same month last year. A busy August added to what was the busiest ever summer period at Dublin Airport, with just over 11.3 million passengers travelling through – an additional 198,000 or +1.8% compared to the same period last year. The busy-ness of the summer is highlighted by the fact that every day in June, July and August saw the airport welcome more than 100,000 passengers.
The busiest day in August was Sunday, August 16, when 134,700 passengers went through the airport, making it Dublin Airport’s third-busiest day ever. Indeed, four of the airport’s ten busiest days ever were recorded during August. Numbers travelling in August were boosted by a string of big events in Ireland during the month, including many thousands of visitors to Dublin for the Manchester United versus Leeds United and Arsenal versus Real Betis in Croke Park and Aviva Stadium respectively. The number of inbound visitors was also swelled by people flying in for big concerts, including The Weeknd, and for the College Football Classic match in Croke Park, which attracted upwards of 10,000 fans from overseas.
Commenting on the record breaking figures from August, the Managing Director of Dublin Airport, Gary McLean, “It’s been a summer to remember at Dublin Airport with record numbers travelling through. August was the 17th consecutive month of growth in passenger numbers and between May 14th and the last day of August, we welcomed more than 100,000 passengers on every single day, highlighting the huge demand that’s there to fly in and out of Ireland. I want to pay tribute to the Dublin Airport team, which has gone the extra mile this summer to ensure a safe and smooth journey through the airport. It’s testament to their hard work that we have been able to facilitate such large numbers of passengers whilst ensuring that passenger satisfaction scores remained at record high levels. We continue to work tirelessly to make changes and enhancements in the terminals to make travel easier for passengers. Following several months of work and a significant investment by daa, an overhaul of the security entry point in Terminal 2 has seen the introduction of new electronic boarding pass scanners, a new much-improved Fast Track facility in Terminal 2 and the continued rollout of landside improvements for public transport users, including the addition of a new coffee truck in the Terminal 1 bus park. Through the first eight months of the year, a total of 25.6 million passengers have travelled through Dublin Airport, which is +5% higher than in the same period last year. We’re expecting the remaining four months of the year to remain busy, not least with the ongoing facilitation of lots of flights in and out of Ireland in connection with the EU Presidency.”
