ASL Airlines Australia, part of the Ireland-based ASL Aviation Group, has announced that it has entered into a conditional Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA) to acquire the New Zealand and Australia freight operations of Airwork Group. The proposed transaction, which is subject to final-stage due diligence and customary regulatory and commercial conditions, represents a potential expansion of ASL’s cargo footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. Certain commercial details of the deal remain to be finalised, and no timeline for completion has yet been confirmed.
ASL Aviation Group, headquartered in Dublin, operates a global network of cargo airlines across Europe, Africa and Asia, and has steadily expanded its presence in international freight markets in recent years. The acquisition of Airwork’s freight business would further strengthen the group’s position in the Australasian cargo sector, particularly as demand for e-commerce and time-sensitive air freight continues to grow.
Airwork, headquartered in New Zealand, has long been established as an aviation services provider with operations spanning maintenance, leasing and cargo. Its freight division operates across both New Zealand and Australia, supporting a range of logistics and express parcel networks. While specific details of the assets included in the sale have not yet been disclosed, the business is understood to include regional freighter operations and associated infrastructure.
Commenting on the agreement, Stefan Oechsner, CEO and Managing Director of ASL Airlines Australia, described the move as a positive step for the airline’s future development. “This is expected to be an exciting development for ASL and a welcome step forward in our operations,” he said.
If completed, the acquisition would mark a further phase in ASL’s global expansion strategy, adding to its growing portfolio of regional cargo airlines and reinforcing its ability to provide integrated freight solutions across multiple continents. As the agreement remains conditional, both parties have indicated that no further details will be released at this stage. Further updates are expected once the transaction progresses toward completion.
