Cork Airport welcomed 295,333 passengers during April. Following another busy April, the airport has welcomed a total of 953,904 passengers in the year-to-date, up to 30th of April, which leaves year-to-date traffic broadly in line with the previous year – the airport’s busiest year ever. As Cork Airport crossed the one millionth passenger mark on the May Bank Holiday weekend, the first full month of the summer schedule has got off to a flying start.
April got off to a very busy start, which coincided with the Easter school holidays. During the first two weeks of April, passenger traffic was up 15% and 7% respectively, which is a testament to the enduring popularity of the Easter holidays amongst families across the South of Ireland. There were further increases in the number of passengers travelling on UK provincial services – including Manchester (+6%), Glasgow (+10%), Edinburgh (+3%), Liverpool (+29%). Passenger traffic on routes to/from the key European hubs of Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol also experienced a significant uplift, with +31% more passengers flying Cork – Paris and +29% more passengers flying Cork – Amsterdam.
There was further good news at Cork Airport this week as Lufthansa (mainline) announced the reinstatement of the Frankfurt – Cork service. Starting on June 1, the service will operate twice weekly (on Monday and Friday), connecting Cork with Lufthansa’s largest global hub. The reinstatement comes as welcome news for inbound tourism, given that Germany is Ireland’s third-largest source market.
