ASL Aviation Holdings Agrees Sale of FlySafair Stake

Dublin-based ASL Aviation Holdings has announced the sale of its interest in South African low‑cost carrier FlySafair to Johannesburg‑headquartered investment conglomerate Harith General Partners and its affiliates. The transaction is still subject to the usual regulatory clearances, including approval from the South African Competition Commission.

Harith, one of Africa’s leading infrastructure investors with over USD $3 billion under management, focuses on strategic sectors including transport, logistics, energy, and connectivity. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

FlySafair, launched in 2014 with just three aircraft, has grown into South Africa’s dominant domestic carrier, now holding 67% of all domestic seat capacity. Its fleet has expanded to 39 Boeing 737s, and the airline has carried more than 54 million passengers, helping to reduce fares by up to 32% on key routes. The carrier has also expanded internationally in recent years and continues to earn accolades for punctuality, winning Cirium’s title for best on‑time performance in Africa and the Middle East five times.

The announcement was welcomed by ASL Group Chief Executive Dave Andrew, who also served as FlySafair’s founding CEO. “ASL Aviation Holdings is proud to have supported the growth of a fledgling airline to become a leader in African aviation,” Andrew said. “With new international routes now added to its network, the time has come to pass the baton to Harith, who are ideally placed to oversee the airline’s continued development and growth.”

At the Dubai Airshow in December, FlySafair confirmed its first two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, underscoring its forward expansion plans.

Harith’s Co‑Founder and Chairman, Tshepo Mahloele, said the airline represented precisely the type of African success story the group aims to support. “Aviation is core infrastructure, and FlySafair has demonstrated how affordable, reliable air travel can unlock growth, jobs, and opportunity across Southern Africa,” he said.

Following completion of the regulatory process, FlySafair will continue to operate under its existing brand, leadership, and strategy, with a focus on operational excellence and sustainable growth.
