The UK Civil Aviation Authority has updated two of its safety leaflets in the campaign on loss of control (LOC-I). Loss of Control Inflight accidents account for the largest number of fatalities of all accident categories. This statistic applies to both general aviation and commercial air transport accidents. The CAA leaflets that have been refreshed cover two critical areas of loss of control during recreational flying: angle of attack and in-flight incidents within the circuit. They have also added an all-new leaflet focused on loss of control during take-off and landing.
While Abnormal Runway Contact (ARC) accidents continue to account for the highest number of events, they are less likely to result in serious injuries or fatalities. Sadly, LOC-I accidents are very likely to result in serious injuries and fatalities so it’s up to all pilots to refresh their knowledge of the subject.
