On Thursday last week the Pilot.ie team had a great night out at the Aviation Ireland Challenge Women in Aviation Event at the Carlton Hotel’s Runway28 Rooftop bar. There was a wide range of speakers covering a host of different topics related to women in aviation but as a history graduate and a former history teacher, the talk that really stood out to me was Michael Traynor’s presentation on the Petticoat Pilots. From Nancy Corrigan who emigrated to America from poverty-stricken Achill when she was 16 years old and completed her first solo after just 4 lessons to Mabel Glass from Co. Antrim who flew approximately 900 RAF aircraft while serving with the Air Transport Auxiliary during the Second World War Ireland has produced some incredible female aviators throughout aviation history.
