PLAY Coming to Dublin in 2022

The new Icelandic airline, PLAY has announced a new service to Dublin commencing in 2022. Dublin is one of three destinations added to the PLAY list with Madrid and Brussels also joining their network. They started flying to London Stansted, Paris and Berlin last June and have added some more routes to Amsterdam, Scandinavia and Spain. The airline was set up in 2019 initially with two former WOW Air executives and these were joined by some others with experience in the low-cost sector. Some delays with obtaining route clearances led to a delay in the start-up and were pushed back to later in 2020. However, the pandemic brought further delays and the airline finally got off the ground on 24th June 2021 with a flight from Keflavik to London Stansted.

PLAY will operate flights three times a week to Dublin, starting at the end of April 2022. By 2022, PLAY expects to be operating flights to 23 destinations across Europe from Keflavik.

Commenting on the announcement of their new routes, the CEO of PLAY, Birgir Jónsson said, “It’s really enjoyable to add more destinations in Europe that will strengthen our route schedule. We are confident that these destinations will boost PLAY´s operations and that our flights between Iceland and these cities will be popular among those living there.”

PLAY has applied to the US Department of Transportation looking for rights to fly to the US from the summer of 2022. The airline currently has a fleet of three Airbus A321neo aircraft all leased from AerCap. They also have an Airbus A320neo on order and expect to accept more aircraft during 2022.
