Last month the National Microlight Association of Ireland (NMAI) announced a refund scheme for General Aviation radio upgrades. After one month, approximately 7% of aircraft targeted have registered and many more continue to be registered each day. The joint consortium making the application, including the NMAI, estimate that 26,000 aircraft and aerodromes around Europe are eligible for the funding. In Ireland, we estimate that up to 550 aircraft radios are eligible for upgrade and the estimated amount to be spent is in the region of €1.73 million. If this application is successful, €345,000 will be refunded to the local GA community during the years 2017 and 2018. So far, 18 applications have been received from Irish registered aircraft.
